Most of the coast has no road.
Speedboats leave the Vlora marina for Sazan island, the Haxhi Ali cave and the white shingle at Grama Bay, then work back through coves you cannot reach on foot. Take a morning departure. The afternoon wind gets up and flattens the swimming.

North to the Alps

The road to Theth is paved now, which changed the drive and nothing else. You still climb the pass, still drop into a valley of stone-roofed houses, still walk an hour to the Blue Eye of Theth. Add Komani Lake by ferry if you have three days rather than one. Snow closes it roughly November to May.

Dinner runs late here.
Nobody eats before nine. The xhiro fills the boulevard in Tirana at dusk, the raki arrives unasked, and a night that opened with byrek closes with somebody’s cousin and a çifteli. These are the tables and the shows worth booking ahead.
Lunch is the long meal.
Cooking classes in Berat kitchens, mountain lunches that keep arriving in courses, wine tours through the Kërrabë hills outside Tirana. Come hungry and keep the afternoon clear.
Three countries, one hotel room.
Lake Ohrid sits closer to Tirana than Sarandë does. So do Prizren and Kotor. These leave the capital after breakfast, cross by minibus, and have you back for that late dinner.
The stone towns never emptied.
Berat’s castle quarter still has families behind its walls and washing strung between Byzantine churches. Gjirokastra’s slate roofs run down the hillside above the Drino, and the bazaar at the top sells roughly what it always did. Go with somebody who can get you inside the houses.
Nowhere is more than half a day away.
Tirana for the day trips and the airport. Berat for the inland run. Sarandë and Ksamil for the swimming season. Vlora for the boats. Gjirokastra when you want the country quiet.

Everything is a day trip from Tirana.
Two hours south is a UNESCO town. Ninety minutes north is a castle and a wooden bazaar. An hour east is a turquoise reservoir under a bare ridge. The minibuses collect from your hotel.
Three days out of Tirana.
You cannot see Albania in three days, but you can see the three faces of it. This is the order that works when the plane lands on a Thursday night.
Day 1
Castle, bazaar, cable car
Krujë in the morning for Skanderbeg’s castle and the wooden bazaar under it, back to Tirana for the Dajti cable car at golden hour, dinner in Blloku. Short driving, long views.

South to Berat, up into the castle quarter before the coaches, lunch by the Osum. Most operators bolt on Belsh Lake or a winery for the drive home. Nine hours door to door.

The lake above the city
An hour out of Tirana, then a steep hour on foot up Gamti to the turquoise reservoir below. Start at seven in July; there is no shade anywhere on that ridge.
